Mechanical fuel pump 23100-61030 for the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, FJ45, FJ55 and BJ40 built from 1977 to 1979, covering the 2F 4.2 litre petrol and the B 3.0 litre engine. This is the engine mounted pump that lifts fuel from the tank and feeds the carburettor, driven by an eccentric on the camshaft instead of an electric motor.

The body is a two valve diaphragm pump. The cam lever pulls the diaphragm down against its spring and fuel is drawn in through the inlet valve; on the return stroke the spring pushes the fuel out to the carburettor. A sediment bowl under the body catches water and rust before they reach the float needle, which is why these pumps last as long as the bowl is drained now and then.

The usual failure is a diaphragm that has gone hard with age. The truck still starts and idles, then leans out on a long climb or under a loaded trailer, and the fault gets blamed on the carburettor. Other signs are a long crank from cold after the vehicle has stood overnight, a petrol smell in the sump when the diaphragm tears, and fuel weeping from the weep hole on the underside of the body. Ethanol blended petrol speeds all of this up, because it attacks the older diaphragm and valve compounds.

Fitting is two bolts to the block plus the inlet and outlet unions. Use a new gasket and keep the insulator block, otherwise the pump heat soaks and vapour locks on a hot restart. The lever arm has to sit under the cam eccentric, not on top of it, and the arm must be free to move before the bolts are torqued. Crank the engine with the outlet union cracked until fuel runs, then tighten and check for weeps at idle and at 2000 rpm.

Supplied with the mounting gasket. Check the inline filter and the tank pickup screen at the same time, because a blocked screen makes a good pump look weak. 12 month warranty against manufacturing defects.
