About this part

Clutch slave cylinder 2N15-7K640-AA fits the Ford EcoSport 1.6 8V, the 1.6 Flex and the 2.0 16V petrol models built in Brazil between 2003 and 2012, and it is the external cylinder that pushes the release fork when the pedal is pressed.

The body is a cast iron housing bored to 19.05 mm, which is three quarters of an inch, so the piston area matches the master cylinder the car left the factory with and the pedal effort and travel stay as designed. Inside there is a single piston with a rubber cup seal, a return spring and a push rod that comes out of the front of the housing through a ribbed rubber boot. The boot is the part that keeps road water and clutch dust off the bore; once it splits, the bore rusts and the seal cuts itself on the rust. A bleed screw sits on top of the housing so the hydraulic circuit can be purged after fitting. The mounting is by two bolts through the machined flange on the side of the body, and the hydraulic inlet is a threaded port that takes the flare nut on the supply line.

How it fails. The usual first sign is a pedal that feels soft or that sinks slowly when held down at a traffic light, followed by the gears becoming hard to select because the clutch no longer fully disengages. Fluid weeping past the cup shows as a damp, oily patch on the boot or on the bell housing below the cylinder, and the reservoir level drops without any visible leak at the master. A cylinder that has sat dry for months often seizes, and pressing the pedal then bends the push rod instead of moving the fork.

Fitting notes. Clamp the supply hose or drain the reservoir first, because brake fluid strips paint. Unbolt the two flange bolts, pull the cylinder off the fork, and check the fork and the release bearing while the cylinder is out, since a worn fork will destroy a new cylinder in a few thousand kilometres. Bolt the new cylinder on with the push rod entered in the fork socket, connect the line, and bleed from the slave screw with a helper holding the pedal. Use DOT 4 brake fluid only, never mineral oil or engine oil, because mineral oil swells every rubber seal in the system. Check that the boot is seated and that the push rod has a little free play when the pedal is released so the seal can return fully.

Supplied as one cylinder with push rod, boot and bleed screw fitted, individually boxed. Twelve month warranty.
