About this part
Fuel pump assembly 77020-02120, also cross referenced as 77020-02060, 77020-21170 and 77020-12800, is the complete in tank module for the Toyota Corolla ZRE152 from 2007 to 2013, the ZRE182 and Levin from 2013, and the Corolla Rumion E150. The same number is often listed as a fuel level sensor because the sender is part of the module, but what is supplied here is the full assembly with the pump, the bracket and the sender together.
The module is built around a cylindrical electric pump housed in a black plastic shell, with the motor armature running in fuel for cooling and lubrication. The inlet sits in a white acetal bracket that also carries the pick up strainer, and the outlet runs up a thin steel tube to the top plate where the quick connect fitting and the electrical connector are. A level sender with its float arm is clipped to the same bracket, so the whole module goes in as one piece through the access hole under the rear seat. The pump is a peripheral or turbine type rather than a roller vane, which is why it runs quietly and why it tolerates the fine debris that gets past the strainer without scoring.
Output on this family is around 3.0 to 3.5 bar at the rail with a free flow near 90 litres per hour, which is more than the 1.8 needs at full load, so the excess is returned or bypassed inside the module and the rail pressure is held by the regulator. That margin is deliberate: as the pump wears, flow falls before pressure does, and the first sign is not a no start but a lean condition at high rpm.
How they fail. A worn pump gives long cranking when cold, a stumble when the throttle is opened hard above 4000 rpm, and a whining or buzzing from under the rear seat that gets louder as the tank empties. A pump that has seized gives a crank with no start and no sound from the tank at key on. A split or blocked strainer causes the same lean symptoms but the pump itself may be fine, so the strainer has to be inspected before the module is condemned. A cracked top plate or a perished O-ring gives a fuel smell around the car and a visible damp ring on top of the tank.
Fitting notes. Depressurise at the fuel line first, disconnect the battery, and work with the tank under a quarter full. Remove the rear seat base and the access cover, unplug the connector, release the quick connect with its plastic tab rather than by levering the pipe, and undo the eight retaining ring bolts in a cross pattern. Lift the module out with the float arm tilted so it clears the tank opening, and note which way the arm points before it comes out. Transfer nothing from the old module: the new one arrives complete. Fit a new gasket dry, lower the module with the arm in the same orientation, tighten the ring evenly, then cycle the ignition three times to prime before cranking. Check for leaks at the top plate with the engine running before the seat goes back.
Supplied as one complete module with pump, bracket, strainer, sender and gasket. Twelve month warranty.
