Hood Lock Control Cable 53630-02420 for Toyota Corolla

Hood lock control cable 53630-02420, also written 5363002420, for the Toyota Corolla E180 saloon built from 2013 to 2019 with the 1.3, 1.4 D-4D, 1.6 and 1.8 engines.

The part is the complete cable assembly that runs from the release lever in the driver footwell, through the bulkhead grommet, along the inner wing and up to the hood latch at the front. It is supplied as an inner cable inside a lined outer sheath, with the moulded end fittings already crimped on at both ends: a barrel nipple that hooks into the release lever and a hooked end that clips into the latch. The sheath has the rubber grommet for the bulkhead and the locating collars that sit in the clips along the radiator support moulded onto it, so nothing has to be transferred from the old cable.

Why they are replaced. The usual failure is a cable that has dried out and started to bind, so the lever feels heavy and the hood does not pop until the lever is pulled twice. A cable that has frayed inside the sheath will eventually snap, and on this generation the break almost always happens at the latch end where the inner cable bends around the last clip. A hood that will not stay shut, or a lever that comes up with no resistance at all, is the other pattern. On a car that has been in a minor front end repair, the cable is often found routed outside its clips and rubbed through on the radiator support.

Fitting notes. Work from inside the car first: pull the lower dash trim and the kick panel, unhook the barrel from the release lever, then push the sheath grommet out of the bulkhead. Tie a length of thin wire to the old cable before pulling it out, so the new one can be pulled back along the same route without dismantling the front end. In the engine bay, release the cable from the clips along the radiator support and unhook it from the latch, then feed the new assembly through from the cabin. Seat the bulkhead grommet fully, clip the sheath into every original clip, and check that the inner cable is not under tension with the hood closed. Test the latch three or four times before closing the hood for real, and put a little grease on the latch mechanism while the cable is off.
