About this part
Rear brake shoe set 1H0698525D, also supplied as 1H0698525 and 6Q0698525, fits the 200 by 40 mm rear drums used across the Volkswagen group, from the VW Golf III, Vento, Polo III, IV and V, Lupo, Fox, UP!, Caddy pickup and Passat B3/B4, through the Seat Ibiza II, III and IV, Cordoba, Toledo, Arosa and Mii, to the Skoda Fabia I, II and III, Rapid, Felicia, Favorit and Citigo and the Audi 80, 90 and A2, from 1986 to 2022.
The set is four shoes, two per side, on pressed steel tables with the friction lining bonded and riveted in place. The lining is a semi metallic compound chosen for a drum brake that does most of its work at low speed, and it is chamfered at both ends so it does not grab as the drum starts to turn. Each shoe carries a self adjusting wedge that takes up the wear as the lining bed in, so there is no manual adjuster to set on most of these cars. The trailing shoe has the handbrake lever riveted to it, and the leading shoe carries the return spring anchor. The drum itself, the wheel cylinders and the springs are not part of this set unless the listing says otherwise.
How they fail. The handbrake needs more and more clicks to hold the car, and eventually it will not hold on a hill at all. There is a scraping or a light squeal from the rear when the car is rolling slowly, and the drum gets hot after a short drive. A wheel cylinder that has been weeping coats the lining in brake fluid, which makes it swell and grab, and that is the one failure that cannot be fixed by fitting new shoes alone. On high mileage cars the drum wears a lip on the inside edge, so the new shoes have to be wound in to get the drum back on, and a drum that is scored or below its minimum diameter should be replaced rather than skimmed.
Fitting notes. Release the handbrake fully and chock the front wheels. Remove the drum; if it will not come off, back the self adjuster off through the bolt hole in the drum face rather than hitting it with a hammer. Clean the dust out with brake cleaner, never with compressed air in a closed workshop, and check both wheel cylinders for weeping before anything new goes on. Note the spring and lever positions before stripping, fit the new shoes with new hold down springs, and make sure the adjuster wedge is seated. Refit the drum, press the pedal several times until the adjuster clicks up, then bed the shoes in with a series of gentle stops from 50 km/h and recheck the handbrake travel after 200 km.
Supplied as one axle set of four shoes with the handbrake levers fitted. Twelve month warranty.
