Rear brake shoe set 7701207178, also sold as 440A05169R and 7701206429, fits the 203 by 39 mm rear drums on the Renault Clio II and Clio IV, the Thalia I, II and III, the Logan and Sandero in both Renault and Dacia form, the Dacia Duster, the Nissan Micra K13, Note E12 and Almera N17 and the Lada Largus and XRAY, from 1998 to 2024.

The set is four shoes for one axle, built on steel tables with the lining bonded to the web and finished with a chamfer at each end. This is the Bosch drum brake used on the B platform cars, so the shoes carry Bosch pattern levers and springs rather than the ATE pattern used on some of the larger Renault models, and the two are not interchangeable even though the drum diameter looks the same. The handbrake lever is pinned to the trailing shoe and the adjuster sits between the two shoes at the top, so the set can be fitted without swapping parts from the old shoes. The lining is a low metallic compound that works well from cold, which matters on a car that spends its life in town.

How they fail. The first complaint is usually the handbrake: it needs six or seven clicks instead of three or four, and the car creeps on a slope with the lever pulled up. After that comes a squeal that goes away when the brake pedal is pressed, or a scraping that stays. A rear wheel that locks early under light braking is a sign that one lining is contaminated with fluid or grease. Because these linings are bonded rather than riveted, a worn shoe can shed the lining completely once the bond line has rusted, and that usually takes the drum with it. A drum with a deep lip or blue spots from overheating should be replaced, not reused.

Fitting notes. Slacken the wheel bolts, raise the rear, and release the handbrake before the drum comes off. Back the adjuster off through the access hole if the drum is tight, and never use a slide hammer on the drum face. Clean the backplate, check the wheel cylinder for weeping and the handbrake cable for free movement, then fit the new shoes with new hold down springs and note which way the lever and the adjuster sit before stripping the old ones. Refit the drum, adjust until there is a light drag, and set the handbrake to three to five clicks. Bed the shoes in over the first 200 km and recheck the adjustment afterwards, because new linings compress and the lever travel will grow.
