About this part

Intake manifold gasket 7701069204 for Renault petrol engines. This is the port face gasket that seals the plastic intake manifold against the cylinder head, and it is the part that fails when the engine starts drawing air that the airflow meter has not measured.

Typical symptoms are a hunting idle when cold, a whistle that changes with throttle angle, a P0171 or P0507 style fault code, and a smell of fuel under the bonnet at idle. Because the leak is on the intake side the engine runs lean, which raises combustion temperature and puts the catalyst and the exhaust valves at risk if it is ignored for long. On turbocharged versions the same leak shows as poor boost response and a hesitation on tip-in.

The gasket is a moulded rubber seal with moulded-in locating beads. It has no gasket cement on it from the factory and none should be added: sealant migrates into the ports and can break off into the engine. Clean the head face and the manifold face until they are dry and free of old gasket residue, check the manifold for a warped flange with a straight edge, then seat the new gasket and torque the bolts in a spiral pattern from the centre outwards.

After the repair, clear the fault codes and let the engine idle for ten minutes so the fuel trims relearn. Recheck with a smoke test if the whistle persists.
