About this part

Front axle left brake wheel cylinder W023-33-510 for the Mazda Titan T3000, T3500 and T4000 trucks built 1981 to 1998. Bore 28.57 mm, the left hand unit on the front axle of the drum brake system.

The cylinder body is a single grey cast iron casting. Cast iron rather than aluminium is the right choice on a Titan because the front drums on a loaded cab-over truck run hot, and iron keeps the bore round instead of growing oval with heat cycles. The bore is honed in two passes to a fine finish so the cups bed in quickly and seal against full hydraulic pressure without weeping.

Inside the housing sit two opposed pistons, each with a rubber cup and a dust boot, and a steel expander that keeps the cup pressed against the bore as the lining wears and the pistons travel further out. The bleed nipple is machined into the casting on this side.

Fitting notes: clamp the flexible hose, remove the drum, unhook the shoes and return springs, crack the hydraulic line loose before undoing the two flange bolts so the pipe is not twisted. Clean the backing plate, apply brake grease only to the shoe contact pads, never to the bore. Fit with the bleed nipple highest, adjust the shoe clearance, then bleed until the pedal is firm.

A wet dust boot, a pedal that sinks when held, or one front drum hotter than the other means the cylinder has gone. Replace the opposite side at the same time. 12 month warranty.
